LASIK CANDIDATES

Are You A Candidate for LASIK?

In general, the ideal patient has a healthy cornea, and must not have had a significant increase in their prescription in the last year.  People with certain medical conditions or pregnant women may not be good candidates.

To determine whether LASIK is right for you, you should undergo a free evaluation with one of our Optometrists.  There, we can determine your level of refractive error.  If your refractive error falls within the parameters considered appropriate for LASIK, more extensive tests may be performed. We can confirm that your degree of myopia or astigmatism is within the proper range, make sure that you are currently free of any eye disease and discuss other details of both your case and the LASIK procedure. If you are not a candidate for LASIK you may still be able to pursue other refractive procedures for vision correction such as Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Refractive Lensectomy with a premium intraocular lens, the Visian ICL™ a new intraocular lens with Collamer® technology, or possibly a highly advanced hybrid contact lens called Synergeyes® for good comfort and vision on difficult to fit eyes.

The decision to undergo LASIK or any Refractive Surgery is a personal one.  Before undergoing LASIK, it is important to know the risks involved, and to have realistic expectations.  A LASIK procedure can drastically improve, but not make perfect, your vision.  LASIK doesn't correct for presbyopia directly, an aging of the eye that typically requires people to use reading glasses.  Many patients past the age of 40 may need to wear reading glasses once LASIK has been performed if they do not choose an alternative called monovision correction to reduce the need for reading glasses.
